  • Sustainability in the Financial Markets and Canadian Regulatory Reform

    Description: Edward J. Waitzer, Jarislowsky-Dimma-Mooney Chair in Corporate Governance and Senior Partner, Stikeman Elliott LLP lectured on this topic, calling for regulatory reform and an end to short-termism. Specifically, gaps in Canadian regulation, the role and priorities of the regulator, and changes needed to the capital markets to encourage responsible investment were examined. The topics of restoring trust and confidence in investing in markets were reviewed, along with the related impact on institutional investors.

  • International Financial Reporting Standards: What Lawyers Need to Know
    Description: a joint program of the Hennick Centre and Osgoode Professional Development, June 11, 2010. By January 1, 2011, all Canadian publicly traded companies will be required to file their financial statements using International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). The implementation of IFRS is a major change initiative that will have a significant impact on an entity’s financial processes, reporting requirements and business activities including corporate and securities laws and contractual obligations. This program brought together leading industry experts and practitioners who shared thoughtful and sophisticated analysis of the key issues companies face in transitioning to IFRS, as well as what you need to know to advise your clients properly.

  • The Fiduciary Standard and Beyond: Rethinking the Client-Advisor Relationship

    Description: This one-day conference, co-presented with FAIR Canada, focused on the client-advisor relationship, and how that relationship connects to the debate over extending the fiduciary standard to all financial service professionals. Speakers provided Canadian and international perspectives, and included scholars as well as regulatory and industry experts. Our ultimate objective is to inform and motivate relevant policy initiatives in Canada through ongoing discussion and comparative analysis.

  • After the Meltdown: The Limits and Possibilities of Economics - The Inaugural Conference of Glendon’s New Centre for Global Challenges.

    Description: What are the actual causes and consequences of the economic crisis? Why were economists not able to predict this catastrophe? What are the limits and possibilities of the social sciences to shape societies? These were some of the questions addressed at the first conference of Glendon’s new Centre for Global Challenges. The conference featured George Akerlof, Nobel Prize winner in Economics and Daniele E. Koshland Sr. Distinguished Professor of Economics at the University of California, Berkeley.
    Organized by: This inaugural conference was organized by the Centre for Global Challenges in partnership with the Glendon School of Public and International Affairs, the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR), Canada 2020, the Hennick Centre for Business and Law and The Mark News and Global Brief.
  • Davies Fund for Business Law Lecture: Ben Heineman

    Description: Benjamin W. Heineman Jr. is currently a fellow at the Harvard Law School Program on the Legal Profession and at the Harvard Kennedy School, as well as Senior Counsel to WilmerHale. As former General Counsel at GE, Mr. Heineman helped create the modern in-house legal department and redefined the role that lawyers play in business. He is the author of High Performance with High Integrity.
  • Gender Diversity in Canada's Boardrooms and C-Suites: Exploring the Business Case and Reform Strategies

    Description: The Hennick Centre organized a half-day seminar to examine diversity in the top ranks of business and law.  In particular, participants unpacked the “business case” for diversity and women’s service on corporate boards and in executive management, primarily in Canada.  This seminar was a chance for business leaders, scholars and students to engage in thought-provoking discussion of challenging and provocative issues.  The unique perspective of this program – assessing the business case for diversity and how to move forward as a result – will positively impact diversity in boardrooms, C-suites and classrooms across Canada.

  • A Case of Mutual Fund Fees and Who Should Set Them: The Implications of Jones v. Harris Associates

    Location: Ivey Leadership Centre (The Exchange Tower, 130 King St. West @ York, Toronto).
    Description: On November 2, 2009, the US Supreme Court heard oral arguments in the case of Jones v. Harris Associates LP. Their decision in the case, expected shortly, will articulate the definitive standard for US courts in reviewing excessive fee claims under the Investment Company Act. Our panel of experts discussed the case and its impact on the US mutual fund industry. Although this is a uniquely US case, the panelists also discussed the case's potential implications to the current spotlight on mutual fund fees in Canada.
